The daily expense cap
In late 2023, Splitwise introduced a cap on how many expenses a free account can add per day. Splitwise doesn't publish the exact number, and it has changed over time — as of 2026, most users report hitting the wall at around 3 expenses per day (earlier it was widely reported as 5). Once you hit it, the app asks you to upgrade to Pro or come back tomorrow.
Three expenses is one lunch, one cab, and one coffee. On a trip, most groups hit the cap before dinner.
The cooldown timer
Separately from the daily cap, free accounts see a short forced wait — commonly reported at around 10 seconds — between saving one expense and adding the next, often accompanied by an ad. Logging a stack of receipts after a weekend away gets slow.
